Basement storage organization is back to the basics! A simple set up of shelves and labeled bins will set you up for success. Getting on my soapbox about labels here… 🙋‍♀️ Even if the bin is clear having a label helps you know what is in it AND what NOT to put in it. Putting a tag on the outside of the clear plastic bin, lets the client know which specific gift is inside (and can be pulled off once the gift is removed). These craft supplies never saw the light of day because they were difficult to store in the boxes they came in and difficult to move without things falling everywhere! The solution? Clear & stackable boxes with dividers from The Container Store. I don’t know who needs to hear this…. But it’s ok to get rid of those Melissa & Doug wooden boxes your kids’ food sets and jewelry and puzzles came in. Listen, I know they are sturdy and you MIGHT use them one day. But they are never the same size, they aren’t stackable, they don’t have lids, and they take up SPACE! Save 1 or 2 if you really need to, but it’s ok to let them go. It’s one of the most frequent items I remove from play rooms! Some excellent stackable replacements are shoe boxes from @TheContainerStore, or even mesh zipper bags are a better option! Wreath Storage. I don’t often discuss products I’m not a fan of, but wreath storage boxes are one of my least favorite. They are pricey, bulky, and take up more room. Scroll for my two favorite ways to store wreaths during their ‘off season’. Both ways keep wreaths from getting crushed by other items and off of the ground! 1. Use a door hanger to hang wreaths on shelving units. Make sure you keep them with similar seasonal items for easy access! 2. If you have wall space or open studs, hang a nail for your wreath. ⚡️This change is not for everyone ⚡️. But I LOVE helping homeowners maximize their space in ways they hadn’t considered. This busy family of 7 had an office right off the front door and they stored shoes in the entry way - No shoes in the house! The office was infrequently used and had become a place to store things. We shook all that up by converting it to a Coat Room… or as I like to call it a “Get Out The Door Room”. It houses backpacks, shoes, homework tools, charging stations, and mittens and hats in bins for every family member. Not to mention extra chargers, hair care tools for the morning, and masks. This was a carefully considered change by all members of the family and in the end it’s freeing up valuable assets: other space in the house and time in the morning!
